Ok so I won't tell you again what a wonderful time we are having and how we wish you all were here...but we are and we do!
Reykjavik is a lovely town, not much like a big city. There was a cruise ship docked the day we were there so there were actually many tourists in town, including lots of Americans, we hadn't heard American accents much. A sweet shop girl in the very kitschy Christmas Shop "It's Christmas here every day!" told us how much she hates the Icelandic way of speaking English...you know, like the Swedish chef on the muppets, and how proud she is that she speaks with an American accent. She was 16 years old and had lived in America for a time. The houses are made of corrugated tin walls and roofs, which they paint the bright colors that add to the charm of the city. This is because there is very little timber, no trees except what is planted.
yesterday we went to the Thingvellir national park, the Geysir and Gullfoss waterfall. Also saw a crater lake, perfectly round and deep green where Bjork reportedly gave a concert from a raft in the middle. Great amphitheater. Visited Gunnhildur's sister last night and found out that skilled tradespeople make about $10,000/month and many Polish have come to work. yeah, i guess it would be worth it...
I took the sunset picture from the window at 11:15 at night. Because of the shadows, it was actually much lighter than the picture shows, so I also took a picture looking straight out the window, to show how much light there was. The last picture is the Perlan, a modern building housing the Saga museum. Cool picture, huh?
Those are interesting looking houses, and it is neat the sunset is so late.
